When I first enrolled at the University of Houston to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, I was driven by curiosity about the human mind. I wanted to understand what makes people think, feel, and act the way they do. What I didn’t fully realize at the time was how this journey would also prepare me for leadership, critical thinking, and even data-driven decision-making in business.
Understanding People Through Data
Psychology isn’t just about emotions—it’s also deeply rooted in data. From analyzing behavioral trends to interpreting cognitive experiments, I learned how to extract insights from numbers. Courses in research methods and statistics taught me how to turn observations into evidence, a skill that now informs how I approach everything from market trends to team dynamics.
Empathy as a Leadership Tool
While data gives us answers, empathy helps us ask the right questions. My training helped me become a better listener and communicator. Whether collaborating with peers or leading projects, I began to understand how emotional intelligence can shape outcomes just as much as logic and analysis.
The Science of Problem Solving
Psychology honed my ability to approach problems methodically. From forming hypotheses to testing solutions, I developed a mindset that embraces experimentation and iteration. This approach translates seamlessly to business, where decision-making often requires balancing risk with human impact.
Beyond the Classroom
Being on the Dean’s Honor List from 2018 to 2020 and a member of Phi Theta Kappa taught me the value of discipline, consistency, and community. Participating in powerlifting intramurals taught me resilience and the importance of mental strength—lessons I carry with me daily.
Applying Psychology in Business
Today, whether I’m building teams, managing operations, or designing customer experiences, I still rely on what I learned in psychology. The ability to balance emotional insight with analytical thinking helps me connect with people and solve complex problems with clarity and compassion.
Final Thoughts
Psychology gave me more than just academic knowledge—it shaped how I think, communicate, and lead. In a world increasingly driven by data, it’s our ability to understand and respond to human emotions that truly sets us apart.
