Every once in a while, there comes a strain that lives up to its reputation, and Hashburger is one such strain. Before I finally tried out hashburger, I had heard people talking about it more than once and approached it with curiosity rather than belief. The following few sessions were enough for me to know everything about this strain from its smell, taste, effect, and place, in case you are considering getting it yourself. If you want to see how it stacks up against other strains I’ve covered, you can browse other reviews on the site.
What is the Hashburger Strain?
Hashburger Strain is a dominant indica hybrid cannabis strain that boasts a rich, savory, earthly flavor and a relaxing, physical high. I randomly chose to try this strain out because I had heard the name more than once at the dispensary counter with absolutely no preconceptions. Now, a couple of times later, I can see why there is so much buzz about it. This is my honest, hype-free hashburger strain review where I describe my experience with this product.
Quick specs before we get into it:
- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid (roughly 60/40)
- THC: Commonly reported in the high-20s to mid-30s percent range
- Dominant terpenes: Caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene
- Best for: Evening use, experienced tolerance
Depending on where you shop, you may also see this one listed as hash burger or hashburger weed strain on the menu – same strain, just different labeling from dispensary to dispensary.
Appearance and Aroma
The buds I obtained had a chunky texture along with the compact indica-like structure, which requires time to break down by hand. The buds had plenty of trichomes, which reflected light, as well as the dark green color, accompanied by some purple-like tones on several buds.
Even without breaking the buds, one could smell the powerful aroma from the jar. It was not sweet nor fruity, but it had a strong, gaseous, earthy aroma, which reminded one of a combination of burnt rubber and onion. Although it is not an inviting smell, it was unique enough for me to recognize this strain among others, even without seeing the buds. When breaking the buds down, the gaslike smell was enhanced by the weak hint of pine. It’s a similar kind of loud, distinctive profile to what I noticed with Black Truffle, just with its own funk instead.
Flavor and Smoke Quality
The scent of the herb was very close to the flavor, and I liked that because sometimes you get something that smells good and tastes different, but not this time. When you inhale, it’s thick, earthy, and peppery, and when you exhale, it becomes very umami-like and unique compared to any other product I’ve had. Some flavors I noticed were:
- Upfront: earthy, gassy, slightly bitter
- Midway: a savory, almost umami undertone
- Exhale: faint pine, lingering funk
Smooth enough that it won’t give me a coughing spell, though with the richness of the taste, you will not need much until you get overwhelmed. This is not a strain for anyone who is hunting after sweetness or fruitiness in a weed strain since the hashburger strain focuses on savouriness. If sweeter, dessert-leaning profiles are more your speed, Super Silver Haze sits at the opposite end of that spectrum.
Effects and Potency
I have experienced the hashburger strain several times now throughout the day, and there hasn’t been a whole lot that varies from my experiences each time.
Onset
Onset occurs within the first ten minutes or so, and it comes with a mild head buzz before the physical high kicks in.
Peak
After the onset, the body relaxation kicks in quickly, and it becomes a very deep, relaxing couch lock high, as opposed to an active one.
Duration
For me, it has taken about two to three hours of good effects at a moderate dose, after which it tapers off into a sleepy and mellow high.
In terms of potency, this is a potent hybrid; its THC content has been estimated to be in the range of between high twenties and mid-thirties percent. This is a strain for those who have developed some tolerance to cannabis. Overall, the hashburger strain effects lean heavily toward relaxation rather than stimulation, which is worth keeping in mind before you pick some up – if you want something more energizing for comparison, Pop Rocks is a good contrast.
Genetic Lineage
For those interested in the genetics of it, the hashburger phenotype is usually considered to be the result of a crossing between Han Solo Hash Plant and Double Burger, so this clearly makes for an indica-sativa hybrid, probably leaning more towards indica, somewhere close to 60% and 40%. This is in line with the sensations that I have gotten from it – quite body-focused, but with a slight hint of a head high to make it more interesting.
When it comes to terpenes, the major ones in it are usually caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene, and this again is in line with the pepper, earthy, and slightly citrusy aroma and flavor I have noticed. I go into more detail on how I evaluate genetics like this on my about me page.
Best Suited For
Of course, this one may not be for everyone, but it is ideal if you:
- Enjoy feeling relaxed rather than energized and stimulated
- Already have some experience and do not fear a powerful strain
- Like a savory taste rather than a sweet or fruity one
- Seek something to relax and wind down with in the evenings, not something to bring along for a day at work
- Do not mind having a very pungent and powerful aroma
Then again, if you have never smoked before and have no experience with marijuana, you may be in for some surprises. Check the FAQ page if you have more general questions before trying it.
Downsides to Know About
This is where the problem lies, because the sedation factor of the hashburger strain, which is great when you want to sleep, is also the very thing that makes the strain unsuitable for any daytime activities requiring focus. I did a session early on one day because I planned on getting some chores done afterward, but that didn’t last long. It’s like being stuck to the couch, which means if you need a functional and sociable strain, Hashburger is not the one for you.
Different Ways to Try It
In terms of trying this out, I’ve tried a few different ways, each of which has its unique twist:
- Flower: This is probably the oldest method to use it, and it’s definitely where the strong, earthy smell comes out first. It takes time to work, but the taste comes out best with this method.
- Vape: Slightly gentler on the throat and a faster method, but I noticed the taste was somewhat dulled compared to smoking flower. This would be good for people who want to get away from the smell while using it.
- Concentrate: The most powerful way of using it, hands down. While flowers can get you a body high, concentrates will take it to an entirely new level of sedation. This is probably not the way to go if you’re new to it.
However, regardless of the way you use it, the effects come in the same order; it’s just the speed that matters. If edibles are more your style, my breakdown of THCa gummies covers that route in more detail.
How It Compares to Similar Strains
If you have ever smoked other indicas that tend to be heavy and savory, then the hashburger strain will be familiar to you in a good way. The strain belongs to the same category as GMO-lineage strains – that is, that same gassy, pungent, umami flavor profile – but the body high feels more intense and settles quickly in this one.
When compared with crosses like OG Kush, the hashburger lacks the orange tanginess and is just pure funk in terms of flavor, with no mind-high whatsoever at first taste. For those who prefer savory strains to fruity ones, especially the heavier strains, the hashburger strain will be right up your alley.
Is Hashburger Strain Worth Trying?
Having worked my way through this hashburger strain over a number of sessions, I’d give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 overall rating. This strain will not be replacing any of my regulars, but it’s definitely a good option for a potent and reliable way to end your day. It has a very distinct flavor profile, delivers a consistent high, and is a powerhouse of potency. Where it falls down on the list of criteria for me is versatility – this strain is purely a night strain, and its aroma won’t allow you to remain discreet about your smoking.
Would I smoke this hashburger strain again? Without a doubt, yes, but never before some activity that requires my full attention and focus afterward. Got a strain you’d like me to cover next? Get in touch and let me know.
